The Pathan brothers win the T20 match

The Pathan brothers pulled off a sensational coup at the R Premadasa Stadium on Tuesday night. India were looking down the barrel at 115-7, needing another 57 runs from 29 balls, when Yusuf was joined by his brother Irfan. After a quick word with his brother, Yusuf got down to business straightaway by tonking two massive sixes and a boundary off Malinga Bandara, who had till then mesmerised the Indians by claiming three wickets.
The elder brother had shown the way and Irfan, who had a horrible day in the field, decided to make amends. He started off by forking out an inside out shot off Lasith Malinga for a boundary. In between they kept the scoreboard ticking with deft placements. In three overs the Pathans had lopped off 39 runs. Now 18 were needed from the last two overs.
Irfan took charge by pulling a Dilhara Fernando delivery for six over midwicket and then smashed the same bowler to the fence. The match had turned India’s way by then as only five runs were needed off six balls. Yusuf tapped the first ball off Malinga for a single and Irfan finished the game in style by carting a slower delivery for a six over midwicket. Both fell in each other’s arms as a stunned capacity crowd watched in silence. World champions India had signed off their Lankan sojourn on a high by winning the first T20 international between the two teams.
For a change, the toss, won by Lanka, was not a deterrent. That’s the way T20 goes, against the odds. Gautam Gambhir had provided a fluent start as
India began the 172-run chase in right earnest. He gathered 13 runs off a Malinga over but things started falling apart soon after. Virender Sehwag was run out and he himself fell trying to force the pace. Yuvraj Singh (35; 21b, 3×4, 2×6) then took charge in the company of Suresh Raina (35; 27b, 5×4, 1×6) and they kept India in the hunt, raising 67 runs in 42 balls. But once the spinners came on, the Indians innings lost their way until the Pathans turned it around.

Age is just a number, ask Sanath Jayasuriya. At 39, he pulled out some of his trademark shots to leave the Indian bowling in tatters. He cracked 33 off 17 balls, inclusive of two sixes off an Ishant Sharma over, to set the Lankan innings on a roll. Jayasuriya’s blitz saw the Lankans scream to 59 in six overs. Skipper Dilshan (61; 47b, 7×4, 1×6) then played his part to guide the innings superbly as the Lankans posted their second-best total in T20 international. Dilshan, who was dropped by Irfan when he had not even opened his account, ensured that the fielder payed for the lapse by posting his T20 best. He was particularly severe on Zaheer and Ishant and each was hammered for 14 runs in an over.

No job. No love?

no-job-no-love

VALENTINE’S DAY may be approaching, but love’s not really in the air these days. A lot of women who were looking forward to a happy future with their significant others – beginning with candlelight dinners and visits to spas, to vacations in the Bahamas – are re-evaluating their relationships because of the current financial climate.
TILL RECESSION DO US PART
Kanak Jain (name changed on request), communications manager, recently ended her
relationship, after her boyfriend received a pink slip from the MNC software company he used to work for. She tells us, “After the news of the US going into recession came out, things weren’t right between us. He always used to be so worked up about things. I was understanding and played the agony-aunt in the beginning. But once he lost his job, things got worse and he went into depression and would drink himself to oblivion because, as he’d say, “there was nothing better to do”. So, I decided to do better things with my life and show him the door.” Isn’t that giving up too easily on someone you love? “See, love is very subjective. For me, love is very practical and I’d love a person who would make me happy and comfortable. I am not planning on carrying deadweight around with me.”
Ali Sharma, an MBA, believes that while she’d stick with her man “in times of trouble”, this isn’t an open ended deal, as “if the man can’t find another job in the next couple of months, then it’s going to be time

for me to move on. It’s very simple. When I first started going out with him, I knew
that we could be a power-couple and have a successful upwardlymobile life. But, if that changes, I don’t think I am doing justice to myself.”
Fast-track relationships have a short shelf-life according to this power-woman. “Life is too short and I want to lead a good life, I have to make sure I have a partner who gives me that,” says Kanak. Charu Parashar, a designer, who’s happily married. In her perspective, “The disposable income in the hands of youngsters these days has increased and they believe in instant gratification. These days, if a woman is suddenly faced with no additional resources at her disposal, which she counts as important for fulfilling of her needs, then she makes a quick exit.”
BUT HE’S BECOME TOO CLINGY!
Most of the women who have dumped their boyfriends or plan to do so, also have another major grouse – that their men suddenly became too clingy. Ali says, “He has more time in his hands, I don’t. So, I need some space but
he wants to cook dinner with me
everyday, when I get back from work!” Ramneek Pantal, an exmodel, comments, “A man should not hound his woman 24/7 when she is working. If he does, he risks driving her up the wall. the fact that he has more time on his hands does not mean she does not want to go out with her friends and maintain her own social circle.” Kanak recounts an experience, “When he used to be working, my BF didn’t have the time to call me during his breaks. He used to be too busy talking work to his colleagues. Later, when he was fired, he would forever want my attention. When I told him to stop, it triggered off a big fight!”
GOLD-DIGGER?
And these power women aren’t concerned about society’s opinions on their decisions. They have a very clear idea of what they want from their relationships in the long term. Ali points out, “I can’t take a man with no job to my parents and ask them to be proud of my decision, na!” Kanak also agrees, saying, “Like I said, it’s important that I lead a good life. I’m making the best decision for my future and even my parents would advise me against continuing a relationship with a man who is unable of giving me the standard of life I’m used to. So, I don’t care about the gold-digger tag, really!” So, wine and cheese and a trip to the Mediterranean Islands is what matters the most to today’s women, then? “It is not everything. But yes! It is close. And if my man can’t give me that, I will find another!” says Ali.

Smoking is linked to premature ageing

Researchers from the University of Iowa have found a link between smoking and premature ageing. They identified a key protein that is lost in Werner’s syndrome (premature ageing) and which is decreased in smokers with emphysema, that is, chronic lung disease, This decrease harms lung cells that normally heal wounds. “Smoking can accelerate the ageing process and shorten the lifespan by an average of more than 10 years,” said Toru Nyunoya, MD, assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and a pulmonologist with University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. “We focused on what happens within the lungs because of the similar ageing effects, including atherosclerotic diseases and cancer, seen in people with Werner’s syndrome and people who smoke,” Nyunoya added.

smoking

People with Werner’s syndrome begin ageing rapidly after adolescence and typically die from cancer or heart disease in their 40s or 50s.
During the study, the researchers compared lung fibroblasts (a type of cell) taken from nonsmokers without lung disease and
patients with a heavy smoking history and severe emphysema. They found that the cells taken from the smokers with emphysema had lost their ability to divide or grow, confirming that smoking habits cause cell aging.
These cells also had lower levels of Werner’s syndrome protein, compared to cells from non
smokers. The team also applied cigarette smoke extract to cultured lung fibroblasts taken from nonsmokers. They found that Werner’s syndrome protein expression was decreased, and the cells had lost their ability to repair wounds.
Werner’s syndrome involves a genetic mutation that causes a deficiency in what’s known as Werner’s syndrome protein. The protein normally helps repair DNA damage,” said Nyunoya. “Smoking does not appear to cause the same mutation, but our study showed that it does decrease Werner’s syndrome protein,” Nyunoya added.

New Comedy Serial Bhootwala

Who says g h o s t s are only scary? They can be a lot of fun too. And, that’s exactly what’s going to happen in SAB’s new show, Bhootwala Serial.
And, the producers tell us that these ghosts are not inadvertently funny, but are
actually meant to bring a mix of fright and laughter with them. “Our bhoots are a funny bunch, with limited powers and are actually scared of a mightier power than them. Much like the one-who-cannot-be-named, this mysterious force is called Wo,” says SAB business head Anooj Kapoor.

bhoot-wala

Each episode of this show will be a hilarious face-off between the bhoot family and a human family, as both parties are fighting for the possession of a bungalow. Says Kapoor, “In keeping with SAB’s strategy of relevant and ongoing innovation within the comedy genre, Bhootwala Serial is India’s first horror comedy on television. Arrey, Saif mana lenge

This parade on Rajpath was almost as grand as the parade that passes on this road on January 26. The news that Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor were shooting there spread like wildfire. While there was little crowd early in the morning, when they started shooting, it had swelled to a mob by afternoon, and the shoot had to be packed up early because of it.
They are shooting in the city for a Dharma Productions film, directed by Rensil D’Silva, in which Saif and Bebo are reportedly playing terrorists. But the shoot wasn’t anywhere near as serious – picnickers at India Gate gathered to sneak a peek of Saifeena. The duo did not emerge from their vans, but in the meanwhile, we talked to Raju, a proud camel owner whose camel has become a star because it is featured in the movie. He said, “Hamara oonth Chandni Chowk To China mein bhi tha. Hum bhi aaye they usme thodi der ko. Ab hum is film mein aayenge.”

kareena

Finally, Kareena stepped out looking quite miffed. Crew members told DT that ‘madam’ was angry because Saif was taking too long to come out of his van and resume shooting. The crowd cheered and whistled for Bebo, but she didn’t respond. But when Saif stepped out, he waved back and smiled at the crowd. When the two sat in the car, Kareena was seen talking to Saif angrily. The insider said, “Arrey, Saif mana lenge abhi. Pehle bhi ho chuka hai ye.”

A cover-up for dogs

Rescue dogs working with Chinese firefighters have been given leather shoes. Chaoyang fire brigade in Beijing City have fitted them with shoes to protect their paws. “It’s mainly to protect their feet and has nothing to do with fashion,” a fire brigade spokesman said. The soles are made of leather, while the uppers are made from tough, fire-proof fabric. The department says the dogs working environment is usually very dangerous, and their feet are easily cut open or burnt. However, the colour of the outfit – bright red – makes it look like something of a fashion statement!
